COMMISSIONED PORTRAITS

Creating a commissioned portrait is a very individualized process.  First, you begin by sending me photos.  Be sure to see my website page "To Order" for information about choosing good photographs.  After I see your photos and we have plenty of conversation about your wish list, I can then give you a pretty accurate estimate.  There is some room for tailoring the project to suit your budget.  Once we've agreed on the "what", the "when" and the "how much", I will then create a detailed color sketch for you.  At that point you give me all the feedback you like on likeness, color, style, or anything else.  Once I tweak it to your satisfaction, then I go on to do the final print or painting.  When it's finished, I will email you a scan, at which point you may still be able to request minor changes.  I enjoy the collaborative aspect of commissioned work.  When it's personal and meaningful to you, it's more fun for me.

The time frame for completion varies, but I can usually accommodate your deadline (if there's a birthday for example) as long as I have a few weeks' advance notice.  If time is short, I can create a personalized gift certificate that you can present to the recipient.

Pet portraits start at about $400 for a charcoal drawing, and to up into the $3,000 range for a block print like "Scout", on my website.  A block print-style pet painting like "Molly the Bassett" might average around $1,200.  It could be less with a simpler background and fewer colors.  The prices vary a lot because every project is unique and varies in complexity, size, quality of your reference photos, background detail, etc.
